Avoid these three common & costly mistakes when it comes to online backups 

There is a “set it and forget it” mentality that prevails when many people think about “online backups”. Saving all of your data offsite or in the cloud isn’t always the cure-all for fast and simple data retrieval when systems crash or files get damaged.  So, when it comes to online backups consider having a hybrid solution and to make sure you don’t get burned, avoid these 3 common mistakes.

Mistake #1:  Not having a file versioning feature
Make sure your online backup service offers a file versioning feature.  Most online backup services only back up the last version of a file, so make sure you choose one that features file versioning.  You should configure versioning for a minimum of 60 -90 days on files that are frequently used. File versioning will use more online storage; however retaining multiple file versions is a valuable feature.

Mistake #2:  Backing up more than you need to
Generally only data files need to be backed up online, so don’t accidently select to back up your whole server or computer.  By only backing up data files online you’ll save yourself money by not backing up files and programs  online that do not need to be stored at the offsite location.

Mistake #3:  Only backing up your files off site.
Keep it local, by that we mean make sure you also have a local backup.  Online backup services offer you a way to eliminate the headache of changing tapes and disks and are a great to use as a daily backup but if this is the only backup you have, you may have to wait for hours or even days before you can get your missing data back onto your server.  Always have a current local backup; it can make the process of rebuilding an entire system a lot less painful and much faster.
 
In conclusion, consider a hybrid approach to your back up if you use online backup services.  In all cases, make sure your service offers you a file versioning feature, back up only the files that you need and always have an alternate plan for accessing your data when it needs to be restored.  Your technical advisor should be able to help set you straight on what you need. If you don’t have a technical advisor just contact us, we’ll discuss it with you.

The Long Island State Park Police Benevolent Association will be holding its 2014 Annual Golf Outing on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 
@ "The Red Course" -  Bethpage State Park
with an 11:30 AM “shotgun start”. Breakfast and sign in at clubhouse from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. Should you and your golfing partners be interested in playing, the fee is $175 per golfer which includes 18 holes of golf, motor golf cart, gift pack, refreshments on the course, a three hour open bar and hot buffet style dinner, raffle and awards ceremony.
