Common Things People Forget To Do When Moving

There’s a lot to get accomplished when moving into a new home. With so much on your mind, and so many items on your to-do list, it’s easy to imagine why things often get forgotten or saved for the last second. Even the most organized person you know will most likely fail to remember everything when it comes to relocating from one place to another.

Here are some common tasks that people forget to do while caught up in the moving process!

Label Things

Don’t make the moving experience any harder on yourself, label your boxes! This will make things so much easier when it comes time to unpack everything and set up your new place. Once you start unpacking your stuff into the new house/apartment, simply place the boxes in the corresponding room that they are labeled for. With everything labeled and stationed in the correct room, finding specific things you need will be faster and unpacking will be less stressful.

Research Regulations

If you’re moving into an apartment complex, or a private community, there might be rules about when you can move in/move out and where moving trucks/vans can park. You don’t want to start off on the wrong foot with your neighbors, the property manager, community security or get a parking ticket on day one!

Pack An Essentials Box

When you move into a new place, you stuff is going to be all over the place and very chaotic. To ensure that you have what you need to get through the first night or two, pack an essentials box or bag! In it should include: your toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper, necessary medications, pajamas, clothes for the next day, phone charger, and some pet supplies if you have any pets.

Safety Precautions

Keep yourself, your family and your belongings safe at your new residence by changing the locks on the doors. This will keep anyone who previously had keys unable to enter your new place unannounced. In addition to the locks, test the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house and change any batteries that need changing. Safety first!

Set Up Utilities

The last thing you want to realize after you’ve moved into your new place is that you have no hot water, no electricity and (God forbid!) no WiFi. Make sure that your basic utilities are turned on at your new place and turned off at your old place. There’s no reason to be paying utilities bills for both places!

Amend Insurance

If renting, you may need to change up your renters insurance, or if this is your first apartment, get renters insurance for the first time. This insurance will cover your personal property in case of anything like fire or theft. It’s always better to be safe than sorry! Check up on your car insurance as well. Car insurance rates can vary depending on your zip code/state so if you’re moving zip codes, be sure to check in with your car insurance provider.

Update Mailing Address

If you want to receive mail at your new address, which we assume you do, you need to go online and change your address through the U.S. Postal Service website. This very important step will keep you from missing out on bills that need to be paid in a timely fashion, any favorite magazine subscriptions, or potential wedding invitations! Be sure to change you address settings on your Amazon account and other places you order goods online from too. Also, don’t forget to inform family members, friends and co-workers of your address change.

Don’t forget to that utilizing a storage facility can lessen the stress of moving! Want more moving tips? Check out these other Zippboxx blog posts pertaining to the moving process!
